THE PERSON BEHIND THE PERFORMER

Family sets the rhythm

My full legal name is Mbuyseli Sir Godfather Blayi.

I am a husband to my beautiful wife, Lulu Blayi. I am a father to three handsome boys, Thola, Lutho and Lord. They have a beautiful princess for a sister, Mizwa.

They all have a special place in my heart. My family is my support system. They bring balance to the rhythm of my heartbeat.

STANDARD 3

The acting bug

It began on a hot summer day, just after interval. The deputy principal came into my class and chose four students. I was one of them.

Being called to the principal’s office meant trouble in that era. We soon learnt she wanted us to act in a play that would compete with other schools nationally. I was asked to play a political prisoner.

ONE LINE

“Guilty as charged my lord.”

The hall erupted with applause.
Right there, I felt goosebumps and butterflies in my stomach for the first time. I knew acting was what I wanted to spend my entire life doing.

A ROLE WITH A NAME

Luyolo means Joy

A turning point in my acting career came when I was cast as Luyolo in a telenovela.

This role was different. Luyolo was in touch with his emotions and he was the breadwinner at home. He reminded me of my late brother, also named Luyolo. His name means Joy.

My brother had also been our family’s breadwinner. I took the role as a chance to dedicate a performance to him. The performance touched many people who related to Luyolo’s story.

BUILDING SOMETHING OF HIS OWN

Sir Godfather’s Fried Chicken

When I managed to launch my fried-chicken business, it became more than something I was building for myself.

It also gave me a way to act on a promise born from my own childhood: if I could help, I would not let someone else go without basic clothing or shoes.

GIVING BACK

Because he remembers

Growing up, I did not have much. My brother was the breadwinner and, at one point, I had to attend school barefoot.

That experience stayed with me. When I launched my fried-chicken business, I organised a shoe-donation drive.

Charity work is close to my heart because I know what it feels like to lack basic needs.
